Fitness hotels and gyms in Kyoto
Kyoto is the most popular tourist destination in Japan and there are many tourist spots in all directions. There are 8 local gyms which sell a day pass to travelers but only a few are in convenient locations. However, there are 14 hotels which have a gym room in the low-mid budget category and some of them have a decent gym (compared with Tokyo). So it would be wise to try to find a hotel with gym in the central area with your budget first, and if you can not find any, then choose the hotel close to a local gym which sell a day pass. Explanation of each icon in color on the map and my recommendations are as follows.
Please note that upmarket hotels (over $300 per night) are excluded in this map as they all have fitness gyms. This blog is for low-mid budget travelers only.

Hotels with fitness gym - Red icon on the map
Recommendation: Compared with other cities, many hotels in the low-mid budget category have fitness gyms in Kyoto. My recommendation goes to Hotel Granvia Kyoto. It is within the Kyoto Station Complex and hotel guests can use a good fitness gym for approx $10.

ANA Crown plaza Kyoto has a free gym for hotel guests. There are an indoor pool and fitness gym in the same space...a bit strange setting but it is free ! This hotel is located next to the world heritage listed “Nijo Castle”. If you want a full workout with weights, you can walk to a local gym; Gold’s Gym Kyoto Nijo in 10 minutes.

If you are looking for a reasonable and conveniently located hotel with fitness gym in Kyoto, Hotel Vischio Kyoto by GRANVIA is a good option. It is 2 minutes walk from the JR Kyoto Station. This hotel is new and its gym space is relatively big and free for hotel guests.

Enso Ango Fuya is like a service apartment in its look and has 5 hotels (buildings) in Kyoto. And all hotel guests can use the gym located in Enso Ango Fuya 2 for free. It is relatively spacious as a hotel gym. No heavy weights.

Kyoto Hotel Okura has a good gym but it costs $25 to use even if you are a hotel guest. It also has a strange “check-in” rule. They have the morning open time and evening open time. Unless you “check-in” 30 minutes before its close time, you can not use the gym. This is the most bizarre gym rule I have seen in Japan. You should check these rules in advance if you do not want to miss your training.

Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto and Hotel Monterey Kyoto (green icon on the map) sell a day pass of local gym for hotel guests. It is called Gunze Sports and it has good fitness facilities. You need to buy a ticket at the hotel reception. Approx. $10-$20. Please note that only hotel guests at these hotels can buy a gym ticket.

Fitness Gyms which sell Day Pass - Black icon on the map
Below gyms sell a day pass to travelers. You need to bring your passport for ID check and it costs approx $30 per visit. Gold’s Gym Kyoto Karasuma is in the most convenient location for tourist activities. They even have some large free lockers to keep your suitcase. Gold’s Gym Kyoto Nijo is 24hrs open but it is not in convenient location.
<TIP> Each gym has a different opening days/hours and it changes every now and then. So please check their websites in advance.
Gold’s Gym Kyoto Karasuma (in the main city area)
Gold’s Gym Kyoto Nijo (not in convenient location)
Healthpia 21 (far from Kyoto main area)
Anytime Fitness Saiin (far from Kyoto main area)
Ract Sports Plaza (far from Kyoto main area, No hotel nearby)
Kyoto Aquarena (far from Kyoto main area, No hotel nearby)
FUSHIMITTO (far from Kyoto main area, Rock climbing gym with fitness equipment, no hotel nearby)
<Tip> In Japan, one day use at gym is called “Visitor”. They do not use the term“Day pass” or “Casual”. As most of gym staff do not speak English, the easiest way to explain at the gym is to say “Visitor” while showing your ID (=Passport).
Hotels close to local gym which sell Day Pass- Purple icon on the map
Purple icon hotels on the map do not have fitness gym but they are within 10 minutes walk from one of the local gyms above. You can choose a hotel depending on your budget. If you are looking for a reasonable hotel in convenient location ; Karasuma Kyoto Hotel, Matsui Honkan (Japanese style a bit pricy hotel) and Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei would be good options.

<TIP> Please note that almost all fitness gyms in Japan do not like to see Tattoo. If you have one, please make sure to cover it during your workout.
