Nara is a very popular tourist area with lots of historical buildings and many people come after visiting Kyoto as they are close to each other. Many people stay in Kyoto and come to Nara just for 1 day trip but this city has lots to check out. So it is worth to stay 2-3 days. However, there is no hotels with gym here. Only option is one local gym which sells a day pass to travelers. Explanation of each color of icon on the map and my recommendations are as follows.
Please note that upmarket hotels (over $300 per night) are excluded in this map as they all have fitness gyms. This blog is for low-mid budget travelers only. Almost all fitness gyms in Japan do not like to see Tattoo. If you have one, please make sure to cover it during your workout.

TMK Gym is the only gym which sells a day pass to travelers in the Nara main city area. It costs $15 per visit and they have good gym equipment. Open Mon-Fri 10.00-24.00, Sat-Sun 9.00-22.00. You need to bring your passport for ID check.
<TIP> In Japan, one day use at gym is called “Visitor”. They do not use the term“Day pass” or “Casual”. As most of gym staff do not speak English, the easiest way to explain at the gym is to say “Visitor” while showing your ID (=Passport). Most of local gyms accept only cash in Japanese Yen (No Credit card). All fees on this website are calculated $1 = 100 yen (e.g.$20 = 2000yen)
Purple icon hotels on the map do not have fitness gym but they are within 15 minutes walk to a local gym above. You can choose a hotel depending on your budget. Piazza hotel Nara and AB Hotel are next to the JR Nara station. Please note that Trains from Kyoto stops at “ Kintetsu Nara Station” which is 15 min walk to the JR Nara station. Kintetsu Nara station is more convenient in moving around but no gym around there.
